Tu Es Mon Soleil - Epilogue

"Somebody once told me that she has no idea how I could fall in love with a person like her. To be honest, I don't have any idea either. I guess I'm one of those people who believe that you don't need a reason to love someone. Because it just happens. Just like that. You can never make yourself hate the person that you love."

Ellen paused, took a deep breath and breathed out slowly. "But if I really have to answer that question," she continued, "I think I'd say that I love her because she's Portia de Rossi."

Ellen's eyes swept the huge auditorium that was filled with hundreds of audiences. She saw her mom and her brother sitting on the front row. Regina and Andy were there, too. And then her eyes moved to Portia's parents that were also sitting on the front row. Finally, her eyes stopped on the empty seat next to Portia's mom and she still could feel a pang of pain on her chest.

"Even though she can't be here today," Ellen said without averting her eyes away, "I do hope that she's listening to this song. Wherever she is right now. And I hope she knows that as long as I'm breathing, I will always love her. With all my heart. Forever."

Seconds later, the song that always reminded her of Portia de Rossi and her half-lost soul started to play softly, filling the quiet auditorium with the most beautiful melodies that made the audiences sighed in contentment and closed their eyes, imagining the endless green meadow with the warm sunshine on it, the grass that was being caressed by the wind, the blue sky without a single cloud, and the smell of the spring.

Tu Es Mon Soleil - Chapter 38

The strains of quick melodies that came from the single grand piano in the center of the stage could be heard from every corner of the huge yet empty auditorium. Ellen DeGeneres sat behind the black piano, her fingers moving swiftly on the keys, her head bowed down, and her eyes closed. It remained closed until she played the very last tone of the song.

Handclaps from a person echoed from behind her. Ellen turned and saw Andy standing by the bottom of the stage, near the first row of audience seats.

"You didn't pick up my calls. But I knew I could find you here," Andy said and smiled.

Ellen pulled out her phone from her pocket. 3 missed calls from her manager. She was too absorbed by her rehearsal she didn't feel the vibration from her cellphone. "Sorry, I didn't hear it," she said apologetically.

Andy only shrugged. "No probs. I just wanted to tell you that your concert is still a week away but the tickets are already sold out."

"Thanks, Andy."

Andy walked up closer to the stage, looking up to to Ellen. "How are you doing?" he asked seriously.

Ellen turned to her friend and took a deep breath. "I'll be okay," she muttered and smiled. It had been 2 months since Ellen lost Portia de Rossi. During the first month after Portia passed away, Ellen almost couldn't muster the energy to leave her apartment. She lost the willingness to do anything, or even to live, and she gave in to the pit of darkness and sorrow. Lucky for her, she had her family and friends that supported her in her darkest days. Ellen was sure that she wouldn't be able to face the consuming feeling of loss and sadness if it weren't from them.

Slowly, she started to function as a human again, instead of an automatic robot. Slowly, she started to see things from behind the thick and cold haze that had been looming over her. Slowly, she started to live with the fact that Portia would never come back to her even though she screamed and begged to the sky and the earth to return the girl to her arms.

Even though the scars in her heart would heal in time, she was sure that she could never go back to the person she used to be. She could never go back to Ellen DeGeneres before knowing Portia or Ellen DeGeneres after knowing Portia. She had lost half of her heart and soul since the day Portia was gone. She would never be whole again.

"What about I buy you dinner? "

Andy's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. But before she answered, her phone rang. After reading the caller ID on the screen, she quickly brought up the phone to her ear. "Yes, Sir?" she said. "No. You're not interrupting anything.... Yes, of course... Where?... Alright, I'll get there now."

She hung up and smiled apologetically to Andy. "Sorry. I have to go see Portia's dad," she said and stood up, collecting her things.

"Go," Andy said lightly. "Tell him I said hi."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It's been a while, Ellen," Portia's dad said warmly when Ellen sat across him in a small cafe around Soho neighborhood. "Don't be a stranger. Visit us at the Huntington sometimes. You know you're always welcome."

Ellen smiled a little and nodded. "Thank you."

Portia's dad thought for a while, then added, "Or is it still too hard for you to see us without feeling to pressured?"

Ellen shook her head politely. "How are you, Sir? How's your wife?"

"We're holding up," the old man said and nid-nodded his head. "My wife still cries everytime she thinks about Portia."

Ellen understood that feeling. She always wanted to sit and let her tears stream down her face whenever Portia's face came up to her front thought.

"That's why my wife needed a little time before she was able to pack Portia's things up," he continued.

"I understand," Ellen replied.

"And that's why I'm sorry that I couldn't give this to you earlier."

Ellen stared at a mini camcorder that was put in front of her. She looked up to Portia's dad questioningly.

"We found this among Portia's things that we brought home from the hospital," he explained. "I believe Portia wants you to have it."

Ellen was still confused. "You want me to keep it?"

"Yes," he said firmly. "Portia left it for you. I really think you should see it."

Ellen was about to turn the camcorder on when Portia's dad stopped her.

"You'd better see it when you're home, kid," he said. "I need to go home, too. My wife's waiting for me. I meant what I said, Ellen. Come to visit us whenever you have the time."

Ellen stood up with Portia's dad. She stretched out her hand which was taken by the older man. He patted Ellen's shoulder encouragingly and said, "We'll be at your concert next week."

Ellen nodded and smiled.

He retrieved his hand and turned away. But then he remembered something and turned back. "And I hope you're happy, Ellen."

Trying to swallow the bitter lump on her throat, Ellen replied, "You too, Sir. You too."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in her quiet and empty apartment that night, Ellen turned on the lamp in the living room and threw herself to the couch. She set down the camcorder on the table. After observing it for a minute hesitantly, she finally took it and turned it on.

The picture that popped up, replacing the black mini screen, made Ellen's breath stuck on her throat and she almost drop the camcorder from her hand.

"Hey, Ed," Portia said while staring straightly at Ellen, from the screen.

Suddenly Ellen's eyes were burning and all the emotions that she had successfully hid and buried, brutally resurfaced and hit her, making her barely able to breathe. Seeing Portia's face on the screen, hearing Portia calling out her name, reminded her of how much she missed the girl. She missed her so much her entire body ached in suffering.

Ellen could tell that Portia recorded the video at the hospital from the patient clothes she was wearing. The girl seemed to sit with the pile of pillows on her back while holding the camcorder with both hands. Her face was pale, gaunt, and tired, but she still tried to smile when she stared at the camera, at Ellen.

"I've never recorded myself, so this is a little awkward." Portia said clumsily snd fixed the camcorder position on her hand, giving a clearer view of her face. "But I want to do this because.... Because there's something I need to tell you." Portia licked her dry lips and lifted her left shoulder weakly. "I mean, if you're watching this, then something terrible must've happened and I'm not able to say this to you myself."

Ellen rubbed her own cheek and covered her mouth with one hand, trying to control her trembling hands.

Portia smiled again. "You know what? I actually kinda forgot that you still have this." She showed a piece of crumpled blue paper in front of the camera. Ellen recognized that. Wishing Voucher to Portia de Rossi. "I never thought you'd ask my dad to give this to me. I didn't say it to you when you were here earlier, but...." She paused and inhaled. "I'm sorry for avoiding you all this time. I guess I'm just being ridiculous and hope that everything would be easier if we don't see each other. Easier for you, and for me. But, I was wrong."

Portia bit her under lip a while before continuing, "Honestly, I never meant to avoid you. I'm just trying to avoid my own feeling.... by avoiding you." She fell silent and thought with furrowed brows. "I'm an expert at avoiding my own feeling, you know? To me, a feeling is not real if I deny to admit it."

She breathed out. "And... I'm avoiding you because I'm terrified of the feeling that you caused me," she whispered, then swallowed. "I feel like I don't deserve to feel that kind of unreasonable happiness, which renews my hope all the time, which makes me think about a lot more of 'what if's."

Portia's eyes were glistening with tears as she stared to the camera, to Ellen, even though she still forced a weak smile.

"I don't deserve to feel those feelings. Not while my condition is still like this." A drop of tears fell from Portia's eye and she erased it quickly. She sighed quietly and shook her head. "I've got nothing to give you right now. Nothing to offer. Nothing to promise either."

Ellen shut her eyes as her own tears fell down. Her chest was hurting. Her heart felt like it was being crushed. For god's sake.... Did the girl even know that Ellen would never demand anything from her? She just wanted to be close to that girl. Next to her. With her. Because as she once had said to the girl, Ellen needed her. Portia de Rossi might not need Ellen, but Ellen desperately needed Portia.

"That's why when you asked me earlier, I didn't give out any answers. You deserve to have all the best things in this world, Ed, and I can't give it to you right now," Portia continued quietly. Another tear escaped her eyes, straight to her palm. "That's why I stayed silent... but I've promised myself that one day... when I get a new heart... when I'm healthy and normal... when I have a promising future that I can offer and give to you... I will stop avoiding you. On that moment, I'll stand tall before you and give out the answer you deserve to have. And right there, at that moment.... I will give up my entire life to you."

On the screen, Portia inhaled deeply. Ellen followed the girl's action, trying to ease the pain on her chest. Futile effort. "But then I started thinking... What if I'm not gonna get a new heart? What if.... What if in the end, I won't get a chance to stand before you and say what I want to say to you?" Portia swallowed painstakingly. "Well, anyway, after what you said to me, after you told me about your feelings towards me, I think you deserve to get an answer. Even though I probably won't be able to say it to you directly like I want to. That's why I decided to make this record. Just in case, you know."

Ellen's tears threaten to fall down again. The fact that Portia wasn't there with her, started to attack her again and the pain on her chest was almost entirely unbearable.

Portia tilted her head and stared at Ellen, on the screen. Tears streaming down from her eyes. "I want you to know how grateful I am to know you. I'm grateful for the day that I met you. I also want to thank you for everything you've ever done for me. Thank you for sticking by my side the whole time. Thank you for bearing with me even though I've been making no sense lately. I honestly have no idea how could you fall in love with a person like me, but.... thank you for loving me." Portia's voice turned to a hoarse whisper. She didn't even bother to erase her tears that was streaming down her face non-stop while she looked down and sobbed.

Ellen blinked, trying to get rid of her own tears, her trembling forefinger absent-mindedly touched Portia's face on the screen. She should be the one who thanked that girl. For being with her. For being patience on facing her horrible attitude on the first days. For making her happy and content all this time.

Portia breathed in and out to calm herself, then she lifted her face and looked at Ellen again with her wet eyes, but a hint of smile was on her lips. "The only regret I have in my life is that I can't be with you right now and say all of these things myself. But please believe me when I tell you that I always want to be with you. Believe me when I tell you that I always want to be close to you. And please believe when I say that I love you, too."

Ellen could feel herself stop breathing. Her heart stopped beating. And the world seemed to stop spinning. Did she catch it wrong? A second later, a hope that had been buried on the deepest part of herself started to resurface, along with her heart that started beating again. Twice faster. Twice harder. Did she misheard it?

"I love you, Ellen DeGeneres," Portia whispered the words again, as if she was trying to reassure Ellen. "I love you so much."

"And even though there's not a single thing in this world you can believe in, believe that I love you. With all my heart."

Ellen closed her eyes tightly while an overwhelming wave of relief hit her, dominated her, surrounded her, took her breath away, shook her whole body, and made the restrained tears spilled out helplessly.

This wasn't a dream.

Finally the wish that she didn't even dare to think anymore, was granted. Finally she had the answer she had been waiting for.

Finally she knew that Portia de Rossi loved her.

That was all that mattered to her. Because even though there wasn't a single thing in this world she could believe in, Ellen could still hang onto the belief that Portia de Rossi loved her.

And she was sure that everything would be just fine.

Because Portia de Rossi loved her.

Tu Es Mon Soleil - Chapter 37

The red light was still on. 5 hours had passed, but the surgery was still going on. A nurse would occasionally come out from behind the doors to deliver the progress of the surgery to Portia's family. So far, the news that they heard was the positive ones.

At the moment, people that were gathered together and waiting anxiously, were both of Portia's parents, her grandparents, Ellen, Regina, and Jennifer. Regina understood that Ellen was in need of every last bit of support she could possibly get right now. And that's what Regina was giving her bestfriend right now.

Ellen put both of her elbows on her thighs and cradled her head in both hands. Her mind was traveling to the time before Portia entered the surgery room. After both of her parents had hugged, kissed, and prayed for her, Portia turned her head towards Ellen and had asked her to come closer quietly.

During the surgery preparation, Ellen had maintained her distance with Portia. She was relieved and thrilled that Portia wouldn't have to wait any longer for a perfect heart donor to replace hers. But deep inside her heart, Ellen was terrified. The surgery for heart transplantation wasn't an everyday surgery. What if a complication occurred? What if....? For god's sake, why did she have to think about the worst possibilities?

Ellen had walked up to Portia's bed and smiled to her. And then she reached for Portia's hand and gently clutched it. Portia's hand felt tiny, fragile, and cold.

Portia smiled a bit. With her other hand, she had touched Ellen's cheek. "Come here," she'd whispered. Ellen had leaned closer and let Portia embraced her neck with one arm while she buried her face on Portia's bony shoulder. And then Ellen heard Portia whispered in her ear, "Wish me luck."

Ellen had stepped back a bit to look into Portia's eyes. "I'll wait for you. Good luck. And.... come back to me."

Portia's eyes had glistened with tears, but she smiled and pressed her cold lips against Ellen's cheek for a while before finally retrieved herself.

And now, Ellen was sitting in the waiting room in agony. She looked around the room and saw the same uneasiness in everyone's faces there. Ellen looked down to the white floor again. How many hours more?

I hope she's okay.
I hope she's okay.
I hope she's okay.
I hope she's........

Suddenly Dr. Schultz stepped into the waiting room, cutting off Ellen's prayers. She absent-mindedly jolted up to her feet and marched towards the doctor along with Portia's family members.

"The surgery went well," Dr. Schultz soothed the people that were swarming around him. "Everything went on as expected and we have done everything we possibly could. A new heart is already beating inside Portia's body. All we need to do right now is to wait and keep an eye on her condition during the next week. And hope that Portia's body won't reject the new heart that was given to her."

It seemed like everybody felt relieved far too soon. Including Ellen.

3 days later, the doctors found that Portia's body did reject her new heart.

The doctors were profoundly sorry to say that there was nothing else they could do to save her.

And Portia never woke up again ever since.

Tu Es Mon Soleil - Chapter 36

So that weekend, Portia was back on the stage. The building was jammed with sea of people in it. There was not a single seat left unoccupied that night. Everybody wanted to see Portia de Rossi dancing live after they had read dozens of positive reviews from the media. That night, every single eye was on Portia. Everybody wanted to witness the magic of Portia de Rossi, who was praised by Dee Black and was said as one of the top 5 best contemporary dancers in the world.

Portia understood the big responsibility that was put on her shoulders and her shoulders only. And as the latest show, her performance wasn't disappointing at all. Nobody could say that the media's reviews were 'overrated'. She succeeded on making the audience fell in love with the dance, the story, and herself. The building almost exploded when the show ended. The audience gave an endless standing applause when Portia appeared on the center of the stage to give her final bow before the curtain went down.

Each member of her big family was very proud of her. People talked about the show in admiration and amazement. Press praised Portia's performance again and again in every media. Now, the world had recognized the name of Portia de Rossi, and admitted her as one of the best dancers that had ever existed.

But as suspected, Portia didn't feel well by the end of the show, but she didn't lose her consciousness like the last time. She fell unconscious the day after. And since that day, she was too weak that she was almost unable to do anything, and she relapsed more than once in one day.

5 days after the show, Dr. Schultz obligated Portia to be hospitalized and Portia's name was now at the top of the critically-waiting-for-a-heart-donor list.

At the moment, Portia's condition wasn't a secret anymore. Even Dee Black, who had already flown back to Miami with her group, flew back to New York to see Portia after she heard the news.

Portia's parents and Ellen were, of course, the ones to be seen at the hospital most often. But after 2 weeks of staying at the hospital, Ellen could sense that there's a change in Portia's demeanor towards her. Portia started to ignore her. The girl didn't talk as much to her either. Initially, Ellen understood and thought that it was normal. Well however, right now Portia was much more weaker, so it was quite likely for her to stay quiet.

But one morning, when Ellen had stepped into the room as she always did for the past weeks, Portia stared at her and asked coldly, "Ellen, why do you keep on coming here everyday?"

"Mm?" Ellen mumbled and looked to the girl who was lying on the hospital bed. The cheerful and alive face was now replaced with pale face, dark circles under her eyes, and gaunt feature. Portia de Rossi looked very fragile, and the only thing that showed people that she was still fighting to be alive was the shine in her eyes. And Ellen knew that something's off when she called her 'Ellen' instead of 'Ed'.

Her blue eyes were staring at Ellen sharply, and then she looked away to the window of her room. "You don't have to come here everyday," she muttered.

Ellen shrugged lightly. "I don't mind at all."

"No. Go," Portia insisted. "Do whatever you used to be doing before you had to accompany me here everyday."

Ellen frowned deeply. "But, de Rossi..."

"Go," Portia interjected harshly, still not looking at Ellen. And then she closed her eyes and mumbled slowly, "Just go... Please, just go..."

And since that day, Portia rejected to see Ellen.

"She doesn't wanna see me?" Ellen asked confusedly when she went back to the hospital the next day. "Why?"

Portia's mom sighed heavily and shook her head. "I really don't know, Ellen. Maybe she just wants to be alone today." She smiled apologetically, trying to soothe Ellen. "Why don't you come back here tomorrow? Maybe she'd feel a lot better."

But Portia still didn't want to see Ellen the next day. And the next day. And the day after that. This situation frustrated Ellen so much. She didn't understand why in all of a sudden, the girl refused to talk to her, or do anything with her, or basically just to see her face. Portia always let other people came to see her. She let Paolo and Eleanor in, she let Regina and Karl in, she let Jennifer in. She even met Betty and Vance. But she still refused to let Ellen in. Ellen started to wonder about the things she had done. Had she done something wrong?

Had she done something that made the girl upset? She really didn't get it.

And even though Portia didn't want to see her, Ellen kept on coming to the hospital every single day. She basically didn't any idea of other things she could do beside that. She just needed to be close to Portia. Even though at the moment the girl didn't justify her presence and ignored her, at the very least Ellen could sit outside Portia's room and that's kind of equal with being near to and with Portia.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the fifteenth day Ellen came to the hospital and received an apologetic smile from Portia's mom. Ellen could only reply with a lousy smile to the woman who looked tortured not to be able to let Ellen in. Without saying anything, Ellen sat on the uncomfortably steel bench that she had been sitting on for the last 2 weeks. 5 minutes later, the room of the door was opened. Ellen looked up to see Portia's father stepping out.

From the face of the man, Ellen knew that he didn't step outside to let her in.

"Come on, Ellen, have a coffee with me," he asked her.

Ellen raised and trailed the man to the cafeteria.

"Oh god, the coffee here is awful," Portia's father commented when they finally sat down face to face on the small round table at the cafeteria. "But I guess we should take what we can get right now."

"De Ro- I mean, Portia can make a very nice coffee," Ellen blurted out absent-mindedly.

The old man stared at Ellen for a moment. His gaze was delicate, but sad. "She is sick," he said to Ellen carefully. "That's why she acts very unusual. I hope you're not mad or offended."

Ellen looked down to her coffee. There was a lump in her throat. The man who was sitting right before her was clearly devastated and worn out of worrying about his daughter's life, but he was still trying to comfort Ellen. She was sure that right now, both of Portia's parents were very sad even though they couldn't show it in front of their daughter and had to be positive all the time.

"I understand," Ellen mumbled hoarsely. "I'm not... mad, Sir. I just hope that I didn't do anything wrong that....."

"You love her, don't you?" he asked Ellen softly. Ellen was still looking down. Admitting her feeling in front of Portia's father didn't seem to be as easy as imagined, so she only nodded a little.

"I bet she feels the same."

This time Ellen's head shot up quickly, staring at the man in front of her and smiled grimly, "I wish I could be so sure."

"She's my daughter. I know her," he stated firmly. Ellen sighed. "I just wish I would be able to hear it directly from her one day. Maybe when she wants to see me again."

"I'll try to talk to her again," he offered himself.

Ellen smiled to him, showing her sincere gratefulness to the man she had grown to respect so much. Portia's father had tried to persuade her daughter to let Ellen in --which didn't work--, and yet, he still wanted to try. And for that, Ellen was very thankful.

Suddenly Ellen remembered something. She blinked when she realized something that she had forgotten. How could she be so stupid?

"What is it, Ellen?" Portia's father worriedly asked when he saw Ellen's face.

Ellen fumbled for something inside her trouser's pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. It seemed like this paper was her last hope to make Portia agreed on seeing her. She put down the blue paper on the table and shoved it towards Portia's father who was looking at it, confused.

"I'd like to ask for a little help," Ellen asked. "Please, give this to her."

He picked up the crumpled paper and read the handwriting note on it. He smiled, and then looked back to Ellen. "And your wish?"

"I wish to be able to see her again. Just one last time, if she really doesn't wanna see me again."

Portia's father nodded and put the 'voucher' inside his own pocket. "I'll deliver it to her."

Ellen sighed in relieve. A glimpse of hope started to build up in her heart. The girl would grant the wish. She had promised her that. So she would grant Ellen's wish. And finally, Ellen would be able to see her. "Thank you, Sir."

"No. It's me who have to thank you, Ellen."

Ellen looked puzzled. "What for?"

"For loving my daughter."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was 2 days later that Portia finally granted Ellen's wish and let her in to see her. Portia's father patted Ellen's back softly when he and her wife exited the room, leaving Ellen and Portia on their own.

After the door was closed, Ellen shifted her sight to the girl, who was leaning back to the same pile of white pillows. Ellen found herself speechless in all of a sudden. When she was anxiously waiting outside the room earlier, she felt like there were so many things she wanted to say to Portia. So many things she wanted to ask her. But after standing there in the middle of the room and finally got to face Portia, Ellen suddenly forgot everything. Her mind just went totally blank.

"How are you?"

Portia's thin voice was heard clearly in the silent room, snapping Ellen up. She saw Portia's fingers playing with the tip of the blanket nervously. Her eyes traveled to Ellen for a second, but then averted to another direction.

"Better now," Ellen finally said and walked up to the side of the bed and sat down on the chair.

Portia swallowed and licked her dry and pale lips, then looked back to Ellen. "So, what do you want to say to me?"

Ellen didn't answer the question right away. She observed Portia's face thoroughly, she could see the pale and gaunt face, the dark circle under her eyes that somehow were still shining. The girl looked so fragile that it made Ellen's chest hurt. It hurt so bad she could barely breathe.

"This is the second time you're avoiding me," Ellen mumbled softly. "Why are you avoiding me, de Rossi?"

Something flashed on the girl's eyes but she quickly blinked and her blue eyes went back with the flat emotion on it. "I'm not avoiding you," she denied. "I just don't want you wasting your time here."

"What do you mean 'wasting my time'?"

Ignoring Ellen's question, Portia said, "You're here now. You'd better say what you want to say to me."

"Please stop avoiding me."

Portia turned to Ellen for a second, then averted her sight again. Ellen could see Portia's throat moved when she swallowed painstakingly. But the girl remained silent without saying anything. Ellen leaned forward. One of her hands was reaching out to touch Portia's. But right when the tip of her fingers were about to touch the back of Portia's hand, Ellen hesitated and stopped. Would Portia retreat herself if Ellen touched her? She felt like her heart wouldn't be able to bear another rejection right now. She wouldn't be strong enough for that. So she backed up and pulled her hand back.

"If I made you mad, I'm sorry," Ellen said. Portia blinked, then slowly said, "I'm not mad at you."

"I just..." Ellen lost her voice and she had to pause for a while to control herself. All this time, she had thought that she wasn't that kind of sensitive person who got carried away by emotions so easily, but right at this moment, there were millions of emotions inside her chest and it made it hard for her to even breathe normally.

"If you don't want to talk to me, it's okay," she continued. "If you don't want me to talk to you, it's okay, too. But please don't avoid me. Let me stay here with you."

Portia's face wrinkled a bit and she pursed her lips, but her eyes were now glistening.

"Maybe you don't need me, but I need you."

A drop of tears fell from Portia's eyes and she quickly erased it. But Ellen had already seen it, and another hope was inevitably building up inside her heart. The girl wouldn't cry if her words didn't mean anything to her, right?

This time Ellen dared herself to stretch her hand and grabbed Portia's in hers. The girl didn't show any hint of rejection and Ellen could hear her own heart thumping from behind her ribcage.

"Tell me, " Ellen whispered while staring at Portia deeply even though the girl was still staring at nothing in front of her, "how do you feel about me?"

Right after those words flowed out, a vague sob was heard from Portia's mouth. Another tears appeared while she blinked her eyes and bit her lip.

"Do you love me too? Is there just a little... a slight possibility for you to love me back?" Ellen asked quietly.

Hearing that question, Portia couldn't manage to hold back her tears anymore. Her right hand was lifted to cover her mouth while she shut her eyes and broke down into tons of sobs that caused her fragile body to severely shaking out of control. Witnessing Portia crying like that tortured Ellen. Especially when she didn't understand why Portia was suddenly crying. She could only do what she thought was the right thing to do. She stood up from her chair and sat next to Portia on the bed. Her hand was embracing Portia's shoulders, pulling her into a hug. Ellen let Portia cried on her chest while she gently pressed her cheek to Portia's head and whispered words she hoped would be enough to soothe and comfort the girl.

Portia let herself drown in Ellen's embrace, letting Ellen pressed her lips on her temple, letting Ellen rubbed her arms and her back softly to comfort her, but she still didn't answer Ellen's question.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 weeks later they got a news that the matching heart donor for Portia was finally available.

Tu Es Mon Soleil - Chapter 35

Portia's parents had urged Ellen to go home that night to have some rest and let them stay at the hospital with Portia. They promised her that she'd be the first to know when Portia gain her conscience back. Ellen reluctantly went home after promising to Portia's parents that she'd come back by tomorrow morning to replace them accompanying Portia so they could also go home and have some rest.

Of course going home didn't do her any good. She couldn't sleep one bit.

Everytime she closed her eyes, she could feel the cold great fear that was creeping in when she witnessed Portia fell unconscious. The doctor did succeed on stabilizing her condition, but they still had to wait for Portia to wake up.

Since Portia blacked out, Ellen couldn't feel anything unless the dreadful feeling that's still looming over her. Even something as simple as thinking, was proven to be hard enough because her mind was completely hazy. She only functioned automatically, like a robot.

Ellen lay on her bed and emptily stared at the ceiling. Sometimes she would glance at her phone next to her head, assuring that the device was on. She also constantly glanced at the digital watch on her nightstand, hoping that the morning could come faster so she could take off to the hospital again. But at almost 5 am, Ellen finally fell asleep, and she was woken up 3 hours later by the ringtone of her cellphone.

From Portia's parents.

They told her that Portia had gained her consciousness back.

After hearing that news, Ellen could finally breathe again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Ellen stepped into Portia's room in the hospital, she saw that girl was sitting on her bed, a pile of pillows on her back while she was talking with her parents. Right when she saw Ellen, Portia automatically smiled brightly at her. That girl looked cheerful as usual -- even though her face was still pale -- like nothing had happened the other day.

"Well, honey, now that Ellen's here, we're gonna go home to shower and change clothes. We'll be back by noon, okay?" her father said.

"Alright, Dad," Portia answered.

While her dad kissed Portia's temple softly, Portia's mom turned to Ellen and said, "Oh, Ellen, I hope you don't mind us borrowing your apartment's key from Portia. She needs some new clean clothes and I figured I could stop by your apartment to pick them up, if you don't mind."

Ellen shook her head. "Absolutely not, M'am."

Portia's mom smiled and thanked her. And then she walked up to Portia to kiss her cheek while Portia's dad was the one who approached Ellen this time. "Dr. Schultz had checked her condition earlier," he said to Ellen. "And he said that she needs to rest all day in bed today."

"Yes, Sir," Ellen replied. "I'll make sure of that."

He patted Ellen's shoulder while smiling. "I hand over my daughter to you."

After saying the last temporary good bye, Portia's parens finally left.

"Hey."

Ellen tore her sight from the door and looked to Portia. "Hey," she replied and sat on the chair provided by the side of the bed. "So how are you feeling today?"

"Much better." Portia stared at Ellen with raised eyebrows. "But you look.... terrible."

"Yeah, if you went through what I did last night, you'd look terrible, too," Ellen said and smiled grimly.

Portia returned the same smile. "I really made you guys worried, didn't I?"

Ellen raised her eyebrows at Portia and said, "Oh, no, you didn't make me worry at all."

Portia looked at Ellen in confusion but said, "Well, good."

"Yeah, you scared the shit out of me, you know."

Portia laughed and hit Ellen's arm jokingly.

Ellen smiled and took Portia's left hand. She held it for a while and her eyes were fixated on their hands. "Please don't scare me like that ever again."

Portia stared down at Ellen but didn't say anything. Instead, she asked her, "So how did people react when they saw me blacking out like that at the backstage? How did Dee react?"

"They were extremely worried, of course. But we convinced them that you're just worn out and needed some rest for couple of days," Ellen said. "And that's what you're gonna do today. Rest, rest, and rest."

"Don't worry. Please tell Dee that I'll have a total rest all day long and tomorrow. I do need to collect my last bit of energy for the show after all. It's the day after tomorrow."

Ellen tensed up. She released Portia's hand from her grip and sighed, "You're still gonna do it, aren't you?"

Portia quickly took Ellen's hand back in her hand before Ellen could move away. "Ed," she called out beggingly. "You know I have to. I have to do it."

Ellen sighed heavily. "No, you don't have to," she countered. "Have you ever thought of what could happen if you just fall unconscious while you're on stage?"

"Then I'll fall unconscious on stage," Portia giggled to herself.

Ellen frowned disapprovingly. "De Rossi, this isn't funny at all."

Portia's face turned back to serious. She stared at Ellen apologetically. "I know. I'm sorry," she mumbled. "Look, yesterday I wasn't in my best condition. But I'm pretty sure after 2 full day of rest, I'll gain my stamina back. At least enough for one last show. I'm gonna be just fine."

Ellen stared back at Portia in complete disbelief. She closed her eyes and tried to breathe normally to calm herself down. That girl was still holding her hand.

"Ed?" Portia called out softly.

Ellen opened her eyes and looked at Portia, unable to hide the great fear that was shining from her eyes. "I just think that.... I think I won't be able to bear another day like yesterday," Ellen admitted.

Portia leaned back against the pile of pillows behind her and tilted her head to look at Ellen. For a moment, she didn't say anything. Her hand still held Ellen's hand in hers, and Ellen let it be that way. Then she cleared her throat and said softly, "There will always be another bad day like yesterday, Ed. Wait, don't cut me off. Just listen to me." She squeezed Ellen's hand, pleading for her to listen. "We both know that... right now, my heart condition is keep on going down and the medications don't effectively work anymore, so yes, there will be another bad day like yesterday. I will get another attack and I will, perhaps, fall unconscious again. There's nothing we can do about that, unless I get a new heart."

Ellen slightly winced hearing the bitter truth, but Portia firmly went on. "I'm sure you know that getting a perfect match of a heart donor for me is everything but an easy task. And yes, my name had been written on the list of patients' name who needs a heart donor, but we also know that I'm not the only person in this country who needs a heart donor."

There was a lump starting to form in Ellen's throat. She remained silent. She was scared that if she tried to even open her mouth, she would do something dumb like crying at the moment.

"Do you wanna know a secret?" Portia whispered out of the blue.

Ellen blinked at the pale and fragile girl in front of her and squeezed her hand, asking her to continue. Portia smiled at her and asked, "Do you still remember the very first day we met?"

The edge of Ellen's lips lifted up, forming a small smile when she recalled the memory of the girl who had tripped from the stairs, literally flew down, hit her, and hurt her hand. "You broke my hand," Ellen mumbled with gravelly voice.

"I didn't break your hand!" Portia protested and laughed. "It was only sprained."

Ellen smiled, but didn't argue the fact. After Portia stopped laughing, she spoke again, "You know, you never asked me how could I fall from the stairs."

Ellen blinked in confusion. "What?"

"You never asked me how in the hell could I fall from the stairs," she repeated.

She's right, Ellen thought. She never even thought about it. Back then, she was too angry at the girl to even think about anything. She didn't even know anything about Portia back then. And back then, she only wanted Portia to stay away as far as possible from her. But now that she thought about that....

"How did you fall from the stairs that day?" Ellen asked.

Portia looked away to the window and took a deep breath. "That morning before I went to Small Steps, I had a meeting with Dr. Schultz because the latest test result of my heart was finally out," she started. Her voice sounded faraway, as though she was only talking in her mind. "I was told that... after every bit of efforts that we had been working on for months and months, after every horrifying pills along with its ugly side effects that I was forced to swallow each day, after the tight diet that I had been following, after doing literally everything that I needed to do in order to get just a little bit of hope that my heart condition was finally getting better, it still showed none hints of getting better. In fact, the test result showed me that everything's still going south.

"Dr. Schultz tried to keep on being optimistic, but I knew that even himself had started to lose hope. Well, so have I. So that day, when you came to Small Steps, my mind was really messed up. I was pressured, depressed, and really angry. I didn't even know who I was angry with. Maybe with my unfair life. I wasn't even aware of anything going on around me that day. The only next thing I knew was me standing at the top of the stairs, looking down, and thinking about how would it be if I just release my hand from the handgrip and let myself fall down there. Will I die? Or am I gonna be a handicap?" Portia laughed bitterly. "As I said, my mental state was severely unstable."

Ellen was staring at Portia without blinking her eyes. She was too shocked to hear the blatant confession of the girl. And then Portia turned to Ellen and said, "Just right after I had that thought, I heard your voice and Regina's. Your voice snapped me out of my hazy thoughts but it was too late to stop what's happening. You know what I was thinking when I flew down that stairs? I was thinking that... I don't wanna die yet. I still wanna live. I also don't wanna be a handicap. I still wanna dance. Everything was racing in my mind at the speed of light until I literally bumped into you."

Portia was staring at Ellen with her blue eyes full of tears. "I -- who thought about hurting myself -- ended up hurting you. You can't imagine how bad and guilty I was feeling at that moment. You were hurt because of my foolishness." She smiled sadly. "And that's why I insisted on helping you, even though you clearly hated me and didn't want to do anything with me."

Ellen leaned over to Portia and put her elbow on the bed. She stared deeply at Portia's eyes and said softly, "I didn't hate you."

Portia smiled understandingly. "But finally you accepted my offer, even though reluctantly, and for that, you have given me enough reason to stay alive." She nodded her head when Ellen looked a bit lost and confused. "Being your maid or your servant or whatever it is, had given me enough reason to live my life day by day. And then slowly, I started to realize that.... you too, have become the reason for me to stay alive."

Ellen was stunned. Was the girl thinking what she's thinking? Could she have a little bit of hope that Portia return her feelings?

But before Ellen could think of that any further, Portia pulled her hand from Ellen's. "Do you know what I really wanna do right now?" she asked and smiled at Ellen.

"What?" Ellen asked back, trying to ignore the empty feeling after Portia retreated her hand.

"I want to listen to my song."

"Your song?"

"Tu Es Mon Soleil," Portia said. After thinking for a while, she finally added. "Or Thinking of de Rossi?"

Ellen laughed and raised from her seat, "Alright, wait here."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 minutes had passed and Ellen still hadn't returned. Portia started to wonder where did the woman go. But right when she started to think about calling Ellen, her room's door was blasted open and Ellen went in with a wheelchair.

"Ed, where have you been?" Portia asked directly. "And why are you carrying a wheelchair?"

Ellen smiled brightly. "I asked the nurse if there's a piano in this hospital. Turned out there's one in the children's playroom," she explained. "And this," she patted the wheelchair, "is for you. Go on, sit on it and I'll bring you to the playroom."

Portia stared at the wheelchair in disagreement. "Or would you like me to carry you on my back?" Ellen teased.

"Wheelchair sounds safer."

Ellen squinted her eyes. "Liar," she laughed and chuckled to herself, "but that's okay. Off we go."

They finally arrived at the children's playroom on the 6th floor after they asked for some directions. Nobody was in the room this morning. Ellen pushed Portia and the wheelchair towards the black grand piano on one side of the room. After placing Portia next to the player chair, Ellen opened up the cover of the old piano and ran her fingers through the keys.

"Hm, it'll do," she mumbled, more to herself. And then she turned to Portia. "Okay. Ready?"

Portia tightened the blanket she was holding around her and nodded. Right after that, Ellen's fingers started to dance on the keys and the beautiful melodies started to swing around the room. Portia closed her eyes and as she once did, she began to imagine the endless and green meadow with the warm sunshine on it, the grass that was being caressed by the wind, the blue sky without a single cloud, and the smell of the spring.

Catching another vague noise behind her, Portia opened her eyes and turned her head. Her eyes widened a bit when she saw some people swarming near the door and behind the window, trying to take a look into the playroom. And then her lips formed a wide smile when she saw the small audience that Ellen had gained; they were 6 nurses, 3 doctors, and some parents with their children, who seemed to be hypnotized by the figure of Ellen who was playing the piano with full concentration. The women even sighed happily and put their hands on their chests while listening to Ellen's music.

Just like Portia was doing.

Underneath the thick flannel blanket that was covering her body, her right hand was lifted up to her chest. And just like the very first time Portia had heard the song being played, it still had the same effect on her. She could feel the song creeping into her chest, sneaking into her soul, and settled there. This song filled Portia with hope and joy. And Portia was determined to make this feeling stay as long as possible.

When the song finally ended, Portia and some people outside the room clapped for Ellen. Ellen was clearly surprised to see a group of people she had indirectly formed outside the room. She stood up and bowed down to the audience formally.

"You astonished them," Portia commented when the 'audience' left and disappeared.

"Really?" Ellen mumbled, looking at Portia. "Actually I was only intending on getting one person's heart." Portia stayed silent. She looked away and looked down to the white and black keys of the piano. Her forefinger pressed one of the key clumsily. "Thanks for playing that for me," she said.

Ellen fumbled for something inside her trouser's pocket and finally pulled out a piece of blue paper. She shoved it in front of Portia's face. Portia's eyebrows shot up when she saw the voucher again, right in front of her nose. "What?"

"As the way to thank me, I want you to grant me a wish," Ellen said lightly. Portia laughed and snatched the voucher from Ellen's hand. "And what's your wish this time?"

"Let me kiss you."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ellen immediately noticed Portia's whole body tensed up right after she said her wish. She knew that this was highly unexpected by the girl, but she really needed the girl to fully understand how she felt towards her. Ellen wanted Portia to understand that she had become the most important piece of Ellen's entire life, that Ellen would be willing to move even the sky and earth for Portia, that Ellen would be willing to give her own heart for Portia if it could make her stay alive.

Portia's blue eyes were still staring at Ellen's deeply, and Ellen couldn't figure out what was going on in her head, or what was the girl looking for. Ellen was sure that Portia heard her earlier. She was sure--

"Okay."

That one word was spoken very quietly that Ellen could've missed it. She blinked and stared at Portia, waiting for another confirmation.

A hint of vague and hesitant smile appeared on Portia's lips. "I think I can grant that wish."

Ellen gulped. Her heart was thumping so loud that she was scared it might jump out from behind her ribs. This was ridiculous. This wasn't her first kiss, so why was she sweating like this?

Because this is Portia de Rossi, she told herself. The one who really owned Ellen's heart in her hand. Ellen leaned over, closing the gap between her and Portia slowly, giving the chance for the girl to back up. But Portia stayed silent and remained still in her position, letting Ellen got closer to her.

When they lips finally met, Ellen was so light headed. It was as if she was floating and she was overwhelmed with so much feelings she could've exploded right there. Portia's lips were cold and Ellen didn't do anything but to put her lips on Portia's. She didn't want to scare or shock the girl.

That small kiss only lasted for 5 seconds. After that, Ellen retreated herself and smiled to Portia. "Well, it wasn't as hard as you thought, right?" she tried to joke. "I hope it wasn't that bad."

Portia fixed the position of her blanket, trying to hide herself behind it. She looked shy and clumsy, but she returned Ellen's smile. So Ellen breathed in relieve.

For couple of seconds, they only sat there in silence. Busy with their own thoughts inside their own heads. And then Ellen broke the comfortable silence that was looming over them.

"I love you."

And once again, Ellen sensed Portia tensing up on her wheelchair.

Ellen sighed softly. There, she said it. She finally said it. And she did feel a bit relieved when she finally verbalized what was in her heart and her mind.

"But I guess you already figured that out," she added lightly. Portia was still silent, not looking at Ellen, not even moving in one bit. Ellen was wondering whether she had taken a step forward too fast. But she only wanted the girl to know. That's all. At least for now. So even though Portia didn't react, Ellen wouldn't push her, because she knew that Portia had heard the 3 words loud and clear.

"I just wanted to tell you that, so you don't need to feel burdened," Ellen continued.

Silence again. But this silence wasn't as comfortable as the prior silence. There was something strange hanging in the air.

"But there's one more thing that I'd like to ask you." Ellen sighed and spoke up again. "Promise me that you'll stay alive."

Portia blinked her eyes.

"If not for me, do it for yourself."

Another silence. And then Ellen heard Portia sighed briefly before finally said, "I promise that I'll stay alive," she said slowly without averting her eyes from the piano's keys. "I will dance one more time and I will stay alive. And then I will stay alive some more until I get the right match of new heart. For myself... For my parents... For you."
