Begin Again: Chapter 20

December 25th

Where are you? Sounds like you’re with a bunch of people.”

“I’m at Andrew’s place. We’re trying to sing The Twelve Days of Christmas but Mrs. Li and my mom fail to mention the presents’ order every single time and they always sing off-key anyway.”

“Mrs. Li?”

“Nic’s mom. We always have dinner together with Nic’s family on Christmas day.”

“Sounds fun.”

“It’s too loud here. I can’t hear you. One second… Hello?”

“Still here.”

“Now, much better.”

“Where are you now?”

“On the balcony.”

“For god’s sake. Portia, which floor are you on? No. Wait. You’ve got to go back in. Right now.”

“Ellen, I’m nowhere near the fence. Calm down.”

“If you don’t fall down, you’re gonna die freezing. Please go back inside.”

“I have my coat on.”

“Portia…”

“Tell me, are you with your family as well?”

“Oh, fine. Yes. I’m with my big family.”

“Oh, that sounds fun.”

“Mm, not really. It’s too crowded, too noisy, it can be quite overwhelming.”

“I love big families.”

“Marry me and you’ll get all this.”

“Ha-ha. Happy Christmas, Ellen DeGeneres.”

“Merry Christmas, Portia de Rossi. Now go back inside.”

“My aunt wants to know what you’re like.”

“Why?”

“She wants to know what the girl my mom has chosen for me looks like.”

“Gosh. Horrible.”

“What if you send me a picture of you?”

“What? No!”

That’s what I thought. So I already gave my aunt a satisfying answer.”

“And what’s that?”

“That you’re just an ordinary, skinny little girl who looks cute enough when not frowning or pouting. You don't have a tall or slender figure like a supermodel, and doesn’t look very outstanding. Very ordinary, all in all.”

“Geez, thanks a lot. I’m so flattered b—“

“You may not be perfect, but you’re perfect for me.”

“….”

“Portia?”

“Oh, shut up.”

What?”

Francesca invited me and Nic to the New Year's Eve party that her office will be holding. You know she works for TIMES and—“

“You’re going out with Francesca?”

No, Ellen. I’m going with Nic.”

“….”

“Ellen? Are you there?”

“If I ask you not to go, you’d still go, wouldn’t you?”

“Well, you yourself are going to spend the NYE with Audrey. Have I ever told you not to go?”

“You know I’m attending a high school reunion for NYE and I'm not planning on bringing Audrey with me. While you and Francesca…. I think I should call Nic and ask him to keep you away from your ex during the party.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Don’t kiss her.”

“What?”

“The New Year’s kiss tradition. Don’t do it with her. If you really have to kiss somebody, kiss Nic. On the cheek.”

“Does that mean you’re going to kiss Audrey on the cheek as well?”

“I’m not planning on kissing anyone other than my fiancée.”
