Dee Black, the founder of Dee Black Dance Company which was one of the most famous and successful dance companies in the entire United States of America, was sure that her premiere show would be a huge success. And she was right. Her premiere show was a huge success. There wasn’t a seat left unoccupied in the theatre. Her dancers had given a magnificent and brilliant performance. By the end of the show, all of the audience gave a long and loud standing applause. She couldn’t hope for a better result than this. Tonight, everything was perfect.
Well, actually everything could’ve been a little more perfect if only Portia de Rossi was still dancing for her company.
Dee congratulated her dancers at the backstage after the curtain went down, hugging them one by one and complimented their performance.
Until now, eventhough she never verbalized it, she still felt that Portia de Rossi belonged to her dance company and she should dance for her. The natural and rare talent that Portia had should’ve been shown to the entire world. She truly couldn’t comprehend when Portia decided to resign herself from Dee Black Dance Company. Back then, Portia didn’t give her any clear reason. She only said that she should go back to NYC due to some family problems. Dee had done everything she could to persuade the girl to stay, but nothing could change Portia’s mind.
Dee knew that Portia de Rossi must’ve had a good and strong reason to quit the group eventhough the girl herself didn’t say anything about it. That’s okay. She respected Portia’s decision and wouldn’t push the girl into rejoining her dance company. But, there’s something that she could do.
Lately, Portia often came to the studio to have a nice chat with Dee and her old friends. And sometimes, she also joined the exercise. When Dee saw Portia dancing, Dee could see that the girl hadn’t lost her talent at all. Portia de Rossi was still able to hypnotize everybody with her dancing movements.
Dee Black wasn’t the kind of woman who would just take that kind of talent for granted. She knew she could do something about it. She should do something about it. And so she did. Yes, she had prepared everything she needed for her plan. All she needed to do now was to tell Portia the news. And she was sure that Portia must be thrilled to hear what she’s going to say. If Portia considered herself as a dancer – and god, was she a dancer! – she would say yes to Dee’s offer right away.
Just as she had expected, Dee found Portia at the backstage. Portia was congratulating her friends and she hugged Aaron Rogers tightly. A big smile appeared on Aaron’s face. “Thanks for coming, Portia. I hope you enjoyed the show,” Dee said when she approached Portia.
Portia looked to her and gazed at Dee with excitement and joy in her eyes. “Oh, Dee, I really have to congratulate you. The show was amazing,” she complimented. “But oh well, you’re a really great choreographer and you have the best dancers, so no wonder that the show was a huge success.”
Dee only smiled and pulled Portia’s arm. “Can I talk to you for a second?”
Portia looked at her with a bit of confusion, but only nodded and let Dee dragged herself away from the other dancers who was celebrating their success. Dee brought her to one of the corners of the room so that they could talk in private.
“Portia,” Dee said while staring at Portia’s eyes straightly, “how did you feel when you see them dancing on the stage earlier?”
Portia was surprised to hear such question. She looked back to her friends, then back at Dee with a hesitant smile. “What do you mean?”
“Don’t you want to dance on the big stage as they did?” Dee pressed Portia.
Portia fell silent and Dee was sure that Portia even held her breath for a moment. Portia bit her under lip before saying, “Every dancers’ dream is to dance on the big stage, Dee. You know that.”
“And what about you?”
“I’m also a dancer. So I also have that dream.”
Dee didn’t understand why Portia sounded really sad when she said that. In fact, the sadness was mirrored clearly on her face. Did she catch the wrong expression? Dee ignored her suspicion and said, “Well then, you won’t say no if I offer you the chance to dance on the big stage, will you?”
“What?” Portia stared at her in confusion. Dee smiled and put her hands on her chest together. “I want you to dance for me – as a guest star, of course – in the special performance that I’d held by the end of our performances in New York.”
“What?” Portia said again, this time with a high pitch of voice and widened eyes.
“You are a really gifted dancer, Portia,” Dee said and put her hands on both of Portia’s shoulders. “I want you to show what you got to the whole world. I’m sure that you have your own reasons that makes you unable to join my dance company again and I’m not gonna insist you to do something you don’t want to.”
Portia was completely speechless, only staring at Dee without any words coming out from her mouth.
“I’m planning on holding a special performance by the end of my visit in New York, before we go back to Miami, to emphasize the skill and quality of my dancers to the world once more. Just once, one show. And I want you to be the main dancer of the show. So, what do you say?”
